A Profile of the Hospital at Home Users Group
Hospital at Home Users Group joined AAHCM as a Special Interest Group (SIG) in 2020, bringing new opportunities for education and collaboration with clinicians committed to home care medicine. Hospital at Home programs make acute, hospital-level care available to adults, particularly older adults, where they live, rather than in a traditional hospital setting. Interest in Hospital at Home and its patient-centered and cost-effective approach has grown dramatically since November 2020, when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced its Acute Hospital Care at Home waiver, enabling hundreds of hospital and health systems to seek permission to bill for hospital-level services in the home. The FY 23 Omnibus Appropriations bill extended this waiver for two more years, heralding continued growth for Hospital at Home programs. A dynamic collaborative of Hospital at Home programs around the United States and Canada, the Users Group is building on this excitement. It provides technical assistance, shares resources and best practices, works to expand the reach and quality of members’ programs, and develops the program and policy standards to inform regulatory and reimbursement policies necessary to spread this hopeful model broadly. AAHCM members will see a number of cooperative learning opportunities and webinars throughout 2023 as AAHCM further develops this relationship with the Hospital at Home SIG.
